The two stories both cover an event that greatly lends itself to visual representation. Both outlets recognized this and chose to depict the event primarily through photos.
As for the layout both chose, they are rather similar, both going for the photo/caption formula. However, Outlet 1 prefaces the story with a somewhat lengthy write-up, delaying the visual aspect of the story. This weakens the story, as the photos are obviously the strongest component. Outlet 2, leads off directly with a photo, and this draws the reader in much more effectively than a drab looking block of text. If Outlet 1 had led with a photo and then segued into the text (and perhaps broke it up with some more photos) the layout would have been much stronger and a lot more visually stimulating.
Outlet 2 chose to overlay their captions over the photos while Outlet #1 did not, I fell this was a poor decision, as it takes away from the photos; the most important part of the story. Overall, though, Outlet 2’s layout is much more engaging, while Outlet 1’s story is more informative, but undersells the visual aspect of the story.
